The protagonist of Az ember tragédiája — the biblical Adam who, after the Fall, is shown by Lucifer the full arc of human history in a series of visions spanning fifteen scenes. Adam embodies humanity's idealism, recurring defeat, and inextinguishable will to struggle. By scene 15 he has renounced despair and accepted the Lord's command to trust and strive.
