Pest

Pest (today the eastern half of Budapest) was the commercial and cultural capital of Reform Era Hungary; in 'The Adventures of Zebedeus Duló' it represents the sophisticated, German-speaking, class-conscious urban world that overwhelms the provincial narrator with bewildering social codes.
