Canaan, the 'promised land' of the covenant with Abraham (roughly modern Israel/Palestine); in the drama it is the central destination, described in Act Four as flowing with honey and milk, with shining cities and giant grape-clusters — a vision that makes the spies' despairing report all the more agonizing.
