A legendary Roman maiden (c. 449 BCE) whose father Virginius killed her in the Forum to save her from enslavement and dishonor at the hands of the decemvir Appius Claudius Crassus. Her death sparked a popular uprising that ended the decemvirate and became a touchstone for Roman republican virtue.
