Zaránd County

Zaránd

also: Zaránd vármegye, Zarand

A historic county (vármegye) of the Kingdom of Hungary in Transylvania, in the foothills of the Western Carpathians (now divided between Romania and Hungary). During Joseph II's reign Zaránd was a remote frontier region affected by the great Transylvanian Peasant Revolt of 1784 (Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan), which the emperor suppressed but which also prompted him to consider serf emancipation.
