The Rétköz ('meadow-zone') is a low-lying marshy region between the Tisza and Bodrog rivers in northeastern Hungary (Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county), historically prone to flooding; its mournful, waterlogged landscape establishes the Gothic atmosphere of 'The Kolozsis.'
