A real or legendary toxic valley on the island of Java, said to be saturated with volcanic CO₂ and poisonous vegetation such that birds and animals fell dead entering it; popularized in European Romantic literature as an image of beautiful, fatal desolation. In 'Ecce Homo' it is both the setting of the opening and the symbol of Rolando's final madness.
