Szilveszter

A fictional elderly gentleman in 'Chronicle of the Fate of Two Coins' — pale, silver-haired, once a miser — who lends a gold coin to a young peasant from the fair, setting in motion the coin's journey through suffering and death; his name (from Latin silvester, 'of the forest') may carry ironic resonance with the New Year (Szilveszter in Hungarian).
