Jochebed (Hungarian: Jókhebéd), Moses's birth-mother who placed the infant in a basket among the reeds; Madách combines her with the nurse-figure, giving her the secret of Moses's identity and the pivotal role of revealing it to him. She dies at the moment of the Exodus, blessing her two sons.

In the Bible Jochebed is the birth-mother of Moses and Aaron; here Madách combines her with the nurse-figure: she placed the infant Moses in the basket among the reeds and was then hired as his nurse by the princess, giving her both roles simultaneously.
