Bacchantes

also: Bacchánsnők, Fúriák, Hárpiák, Maenads, Erinyes

Three types of terrifying female figures from classical mythology: Bacchantes (maenads, frenzied devotees of Dionysus), Furies (Erinyes, avenging spirits), and Harpies (predatory wind-demons). In Madách's essay they stand as the dark counterpart to Venus and the Graces.
