The historical era and cultural condition characterized by industrial capitalism, secular rationalism, urbanization, and the dissolution of traditional social bonds. In Madách's fairy play Tündérálom, 'modernity' is invoked as the force that displaces magic, wonder, and the old enchanted world — the disenchantment of nature that Romanticism mourned.
